Northern California-Nevada Conference Welcomes Sara Steen

From the October-November issue of The Pacific, a publication of the Northern California Nevada Conference of the UCC.

Sara Steen joined the Conference staff Sept. 2 as director of outdoor ministries. In this half-time position she will work with the Outdoor Ministries Committee in planning and supporting summer camping programs at NCNC Camp Tamarack and Camp Cazadero, and the weekend retreats for middle and high school youth during the year.

Ordained in UCC partner denomination, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Sara was for two years the program director of Youth and Outdoor Ministries in the Northern California Nevada DOC region. During that time, their Community of the Great Commission camp in the Sierra foothills increased attendance and eliminated a pattern of deficit finances.

"I welcome the chance to work with the creative leaders of NCNC outdoor ministries program, some of whom I have worked with before in our shared ministries. I appreciated the support and counsel of Barbara Broadbent, NCNC previous Director, as I was doing the DOC camping work. Our two denominations share the value of providing quality Outdoor Ministries programs for youth."

"I am glad to be part of the important spiritual development that happens for young people at camps and retreats. Having grown up in the DOC camping program in Washington state, I know how important camp experiences can be for developing leadership and providing opportunities for youth to hear God's call for their lives."

David Bergman-Hill, Conference staff member who relates to United Camps, Conferences and Retreats, which manages both UCC and DOC camps, (among his many other tasks), added, "Sara's skills and ministry fit well with our needs and dreams. We greatly appreciate the work of Lizann Bassham and Laura Engelken who stepped in this summer with short notice to manage Camps Caz and Tam, and the supportive work of the Outdoor Ministries Committee and chair Virginia Kaufman. Together they and all the camp volunteers provided a safe and spiritual place for lots of kids this summer."

Steen said she welcomes questions and ideas and looks forward to meeting youth and adults at Fall Youth Event Nov. 15-16 in San Jose.  Contact her at <sara@ncncucc.org>.
